Brand Naming

Ellington & Vale names companies, products and ranges — as part of a brand project or on its own.

Naming is a strategy problem that produces a word

Most naming exercises start with a brainstorm and end with whatever survived the fewest objections. That process reliably produces a name that offends nobody and means nothing.

A name has to do a job, and the job has to be decided first: signal what the thing does, signal what kind of company you are, or simply be distinctive enough to become a container for meaning later. Those three point at completely different names, and a group that has not agreed which one it wants will argue about taste indefinitely.

The three filters most names die on

Legal. A name you cannot register or safely use is not a name. Trademark searching happens early, not after everyone has fallen in love with something.

Linguistic. India is a multilingual market. A name that works in English and means something unfortunate in Hindi, Tamil or Marathi is a problem you find out about publicly.

Digital. Domain availability, social handles, and whether the name is searchable at all — a name that collides with an existing large brand or a common word is one you will spend years buying your way to the top of.

What we deliver

A shortlist with the reasoning behind each option, initial trademark screening, linguistic checking across relevant languages, domain and handle availability, and the verbal territory around the name — how it is written, said and used in a sentence.

What we do not do is provide legal clearance. Trademark screening narrows the field and flags obvious collisions; formal clearance and registration is your trademark attorney's work, and it should happen before you commit.

Naming rarely stands alone

A name is the beginning of an identity rather than a deliverable in itself. Most naming work sits inside a wider project — the positioning that decides what the name should signal, and the identity that gives it a form.

If you need a name and nothing else, that is fine and we will scope it that way. Get in touch.
