Brand Strategy Consulting
Ellington & Vale does brand strategy and positioning work for Indian companies — deciding what a business is for and who it is for, before anything gets designed. It is the smallest part of what we do by volume and the part that determines whether the rest works.
Strategy that stops at a document is not strategy
Most brand strategy engagements end with a deck. Positioning statement, brand pillars, an archetype, a tone-of-voice section, a moodboard. Everyone agrees it is good. It goes in a folder.
The test of strategy is whether it changes decisions. Whether the next campaign is different because of it. Whether someone can look at a proposed design and say "that is not what we decided." Whether it makes something *easier to refuse*.
Strategy that reaches the level of decisions is a tool. Strategy that stops at description is a document, and the difference shows up about four months later when nothing has changed.
We do the strategy and we do the work that comes after it — which means we find out whether our own strategy was any good, rather than handing it over and never seeing it applied.
Positioning
The core of it: what problem is this business the right answer to, for whom, and why it rather than the alternative.
Sounds simple. It is the hardest question most companies are asked, and the most common failure is answering it in a way that is true but shared — every competitor could say the same sentence. A position nobody else could claim is worth more than one that is accurate and generic.
The second most common failure is answering it aspirationally rather than truthfully. A position the business cannot currently deliver is a promise it will break at scale.
Brand architecture
What happens when a company has accumulated things.
Multiple products, sub-brands, acquired names, regional variants — usually added one at a time by different people over years, with no structure holding them together. The customer cannot tell what relates to what, and the company is spending marketing budget building equity in names that do not reinforce each other.
Architecture work sorts out what is a brand, what is a product, what should be absorbed and what should be separated. It is unglamorous, genuinely difficult, and relatively few studios take it on — which is part of why we do.
Naming
Where a new name is needed — a company, a product, a range. Naming is a strategy problem that produces a word, not a creative exercise that happens to be strategic.

Verbal identity
What the brand sounds like, expressed usefully rather than as adjectives.
"Confident, approachable, human" describes almost every brand in India and guides nobody. Verbal identity that works gives real examples — this sentence, not that one — and it addresses the situations where tone actually gets tested: bad news, complaints, pricing, and saying no.
Who this is for, and who it isn't
It is for a company whose team cannot describe what it does the same way twice; one that has grown past what its original positioning was built for; one facing a genuine strategic shift — new market, new offering, new ownership; or one about to invest significantly in marketing and wanting to know it is aimed correctly.
It is not for a company that needs a logo. That is identity work, it is cheaper, and we will tell you if that is what you actually need.
What determines the cost
No published rates. What moves it: how much is genuinely unresolved versus needing articulation; how many stakeholders must align, which affects timeline more than anything else; whether research is in scope; and whether architecture work is involved or a single brand.

FAQ
- What does a brand strategy consultant do?
- Works out what a business is for and who it is for, and turns that into decisions the rest of the business can act on — what to say, what to build, what to refuse.
- How is brand strategy different from marketing strategy?
- Brand strategy decides what the company stands for and to whom. Marketing strategy decides how to reach those people and with what. The first should come first; frequently it does not, which is how brands end up with sophisticated campaigns carrying an unclear message.
- Do we need brand strategy before a rebrand?
- Almost always. A rebrand executed on an unresolved position produces a new logo on the old confusion, and you pay again in a few years.
- How long does it take?
- Weeks rather than months for a focused positioning engagement. Longer for architecture work or where many stakeholders must align — and alignment, not analysis, is usually what sets the timeline.
- How much does brand consulting cost in India?
- No published rates — see above for what drives it.
