Outdoor Advertising Agency

Ellington & Vale is an outdoor advertising agency working with Indian brands on hoardings, transit and out-of-home campaigns — the planning, the site selection and the creative, which in this medium is a genuinely different craft from every other.

Six seconds, forty metres, one idea

Outdoor is the most constrained creative format in advertising and the one most often approached as though it were a print ad.

A person passing a hoarding has a few seconds of partial attention, at distance, usually in motion, often while doing something more important like driving. Everything that works on a page fails here: multiple messages, body copy, a phone number, three product shots, a QR code nobody will scan at 60km/h.

What works is one idea, expressed so it can be understood at a glance and remembered afterwards. That constraint is why outdoor is difficult, and it is also why a good outdoor campaign is one of the hardest things in advertising to ignore.

Hoarding and site planning

The creative is half the job. The other half is where it goes.

Site selection determines who sees it, how many times, at what speed, from what angle, and in what state of mind — a hoarding read by stationary traffic at a signal is a fundamentally different medium from one read at speed on a highway, and the creative has to know which it is.

The trap is buying availability rather than audience. Media owners sell what they have vacant. A campaign built from whatever was free that month reaches whoever happened to be there, which is not a plan.

Transit and out-of-home formats

Beyond static hoardings: metro and airport formats, bus and cab exteriors, mall and cinema, and the digital OOH inventory that has expanded quickly in Indian metros.

Digital OOH changes one thing meaningfully — creative can vary by time of day or condition, so a message can be different at morning commute than at evening. Most brands buy digital inventory and run the static creative on it anyway, which pays a premium for a capability they then don't use.

Creative production and specification

Outdoor creative is produced at scale in the literal sense, and the specification work is unforgiving: artwork built at the right ratio for each site, colour that survives the printing process and weather, type sized to actual viewing distance rather than to how it looks on a laptop, and files a printer can output without improvising.

A campaign approved on screen and never checked at size is how brands end up with a hoarding whose type is illegible from the road it faces.

Measurement, honestly

Outdoor measurement in India is weaker than in digital and any agency claiming otherwise is overstating.

What can be measured: estimated reach and frequency from traffic and audience data, brand-lift studies where budget allows, and correlated effects — search volume, direct traffic and store footfall in the exposed area during the campaign period versus before.

What cannot honestly be claimed: a cost per acquisition per hoarding. Attribution at that resolution does not exist in this medium, and a vendor presenting it has constructed it.

Outdoor's real job is usually building recognition that makes every other channel cheaper — which is a genuine effect and a hard one to invoice against. Say that plainly rather than manufacturing a number.

How outdoor fits with everything else

A campaign that exists only on hoardings is a campaign a customer cannot act on. Outdoor works hardest when it is the recognition layer under channels that can convert — which is the argument for planning it alongside performance marketing rather than as a separate line item bought by a different team.

What determines the cost

No published rates, and here there are two costs to separate: media — what the site owner charges for the space, which is by far the larger number and varies enormously by city, location and format — and agency and production, which covers planning, creative and artwork.

Our side is driven by campaign scale, number of formats and cities, and how much creative is being produced from scratch. Tell us the market and the budget and we'll tell you honestly whether it's workable.

FAQ

What does an outdoor advertising agency do?
Plans where a campaign runs, selects and negotiates sites, and produces creative built for the medium. Distinct from a media owner, who rents the space.
How much does hoarding advertising cost in India?
The media cost dominates and varies enormously — by city, by location within the city, by format and by duration. Our fee is separate from what the site owner charges. We'll give you a realistic picture of both once we know the market and the scale.
Can outdoor advertising be measured?
Partially and honestly: estimated reach and frequency, brand-lift research, and correlated changes in search, direct traffic and footfall in the exposed area. A per-hoarding cost per acquisition cannot be honestly produced, and anyone showing you one has constructed it.
How much copy should a hoarding have?
Less than you want. One idea, readable at distance in a few seconds. Most underperforming outdoor is a print ad enlarged.
Do you buy the media as well as design the creative?
Planning and negotiation, yes. The media cost itself is paid to the site owner and we keep it visible as a separate line rather than blending it into a single number.
